A PUZZLE FOR THE JOURNEY

Offline puzzle games: what to play and what to check

Offline puzzle games let you keep thinking when the connection disappears. The useful question is not just whether an app opens without Wi-Fi, but whether you can start a board, finish it and return to your saved progress without reconnecting.

Below are publisher-described options for iPhone and Android, followed by a practical test to run before a trip. We also explain offline play in our own sliding block game, Jumble Gate, which is coming soon to iOS and Android.

Offline puzzle games for iPhone and Android

iPhone and iPad: Numbro

For number puzzles, Numbro’s developer describes a Sudoku app that works offline on iPhone, iPad and Mac, without ads or subscriptions. Its input options include touch, a keyboard and Apple Pencil. It is a starting point if you want a familiar grid puzzle rather than a game built around moving pieces.

Android: Simon Tatham’s Puzzles

Chris Boyle’s Android port of Simon Tatham’s Puzzles is described by its maintainer as free, ad-free and playable offline. It generates logic puzzles on the device, with adjustable size and difficulty. A collection is useful when you want to switch between different kinds of reasoning during a long journey.

Android: I Love Hue Too

If you prefer arranging colors, I Love Hue Too’s Google Play listing labels it as offline. Its puzzles use colored mosaics and geometric patterns. The same listing includes ads and in-app purchases: offline support does not automatically mean an app is ad-free or that every feature works without a connection.

These are descriptions from the publishers, checked on 7 November 2026. We have not tested those apps on your device. Follow the linked official pages for current availability and use the checklist below to check the version you install.

A quick offline-play test before a flight or commute

  1. Install and open the app while connected. Finish any first-launch setup and download the puzzle packs you want.
  2. Finish purchases and restores first. Do this while you have a reliable connection rather than relying on access to the store during your journey.
  3. Turn on airplane mode and check Wi-Fi is off. Then open the game again. A phone can retain a Wi-Fi connection in airplane mode, so check both settings.
  4. Start a puzzle you have not opened before. This checks more than resuming a board that was already loaded.
  5. Make a few moves, leave, and return. Check that your position is still there and that the controls you need remain available.
  6. Check the next board too. Reaching a menu is less useful than knowing you can continue after your first clear.

If a daily challenge or new pack still asks to connect, use an already downloaded board. Test again after a major app update if offline play is essential to your plans.

What works offline in Jumble Gate?

Jumble Gate is a mobile sliding block puzzle: move each shape through a gate of the same color and clear the board. Its bundled puzzles and previously downloaded puzzle packs remain playable offline. You can see a real board and its opening moves in our how-to-play guide.

Plan your Jumble Gate session
FeatureWithout a connection
Bundled puzzlesPlayable on the device.
Downloaded daily and seasonal puzzlesPlayable once their pack is stored on the device.
New puzzle-pack downloadsConnect to fetch content that is not already stored.
Saved progressStored locally on that installation; it is not a cloud sync.
Relaxed playAvailable with the same offline puzzles, with the countdown switched off.

Daily Gate offers a dated puzzle and the last seven days for catch-up when those dates are available in your stored pack. An older unfinished daily stays available. New daily and seasonal packs need a connection to download; a failed download keeps the last verified pack.

Progress belongs to the installation. Deleting local app data can remove your saved puzzles, coins and progress. If you plan to play offline, keep the installed app and its data in place. For purchase and progress questions, visit Support.

Common questions about offline puzzles

Does offline mean no ads?

No. Connectivity and monetization are separate features. Check the publisher’s description for ads, purchases and subscriptions even when a store labels a game as offline.

Can a daily puzzle work offline?

Yes, if the app already has that date’s puzzle or can generate it locally. “Daily” describes when a puzzle is offered, not necessarily how it reaches your phone. For Jumble Gate, the relevant daily pack must be bundled or downloaded beforehand.

Can I play a block puzzle offline without a timer?

Look for both features separately. Jumble Gate’s Relaxed play disables the countdown for new games and works with stored puzzles. Our guide to relaxing puzzle games explains the difference between a countdown, an elapsed-time clock and an untimed mode.

Can I play Jumble Gate in this browser?

The public browser demo is retired. Jumble Gate is a mobile-only game, and the website does not install an offline browser version. Check the mobile release information for availability.
